So I found these wooden tags at Michaels. You get 50 of them for 10 bucks and when I saw them I had to have them even though I had no idea what to do with them. (It looks like Michael’s is sold out on these now but you can find all kinds of similar tags on Amazon…just search “wood gift tag” and a ton of items show up.) So, anyway, I get home and I decide to paint some white and some black, and then maybe stencil on top of them a fun Christmas image. I gave this a shot and was sorely disappointed. I guess I am not a stenciler…I am not even going to show you a photo…it was THAT bad. 🙂

So fast forward a couple days and I attend a crafty class that my friend hosted and one of the projects she had was making a gift tag using the same wooden tags that I had purchased just a week ago. Her approach was so much simpler than mine – she used patterned paper for the background instead of messy wet paint. How could I have overlooked this? Doh! I LOVE paper…yet I didn’t’ think to use it as the background until I saw what she did with them.

So, here is my version of a DIY gift tag and I think you’ll like them. They were so fun and easy to make….I hope you give it a try. Using a stampin up punch for the focal image (like the tree, deer and ornament) came in SO handy to quickly punch multiples and then stack them up to build dimension. There is a super quick video (linked below) that shows the step by step.

I also made this cute gift box to bundle up the tags in case you want to give them as a gift like I did. I will post a link to the box tutorial soon! My hair dresser gets a set of handmade tags from me every year and this was her gift this year. She LOVED them. Please leave me a comment and let me know what YOU think!
